3 Important Things To Know About Cleaning Your Septic Tank System

If you have a septic tank system working as your plumbing system for your home, you must know that you have to have it pumped every once in a while in order for it to be cleaned thoroughly. This way, it continues to function as it normally should. However, many homeowners with a septic tank system in place do not know when this cleaning really needs to be done. Here are three important things to know about cleaning your septic tank system that will give you a better understanding of when it truly needs it:

You Need to Schedule for a Pump Every Three Years:

About every three years you should be scheduling to have your septic tank system cleaned. If you wait too long, it can lead to failure and expensive repairs. These expensive repairs can even include having to replace the entire system altogether. In order to avoid this, be sure that you mark in your calendar when it needs to be cleaned again.

Don't Schedule to Have Your Septic Tank Pumped Too Often:

A plumber may suggest that you pump your tank more often than three years, especially after heavy use or if you have a large family living in your home. However, you should be careful with this and always get a second opinion because you don't want to waste money. It's best to talk to a few different plumbers who are certified to pump septic tanks and talk about the amount of use the tank has. They will be able to gauge whether or not three years is too long to wait to have it pumped or not.

Pumping Won't fix a Clogged System:

If your septic tank is clogged, you may assume that the best way to fix it is to have the septic tank pumped. This won't correct the issue because, most likely, the clog is in the pipes, not in the tank itself. The pumping will only clean out the septic tank, not the actually pipes, so you will still have a clog, which means you wasted money and still need to hire professionals for clearing the clog. It's best not to attempt to clear a clog on your own since you may need to have it snaked. Besides, many times homeowners will use heavy chemicals to clear their drains, which can actually cause further damage to sensitive septic tanks.
